Georgina de Roché

You cannot spell librarian without Libra and I happen to be both! I have a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s in Information. I have been working in public libraries for four years and I absolutely love it.

A few quirks that make me who I am:

  • I am left-handed
  • Jimmy Carter is my hero
  • I can spend hours on Wikipedia
  • I love spoilers
  • I hate avocados

Things I am proud of that you won’t see on my résumé:

  • I have a very good memory
  • I’m able to connect and find common ground or a shared interest with pretty much anybody
  • I’ve played water polo okayishly for 14+ years
  • Only after graduating did I reestablish a habit of reading for fun! I read 34 books last year
  • 5 year Dungeons & Dragons adventurer

A person I am grateful for during my undergraduate journey:

  • KATE JOHNSON. Innis College Librarian. Kate is single-handedly the reason I got my master’s and work in library now. It was an honour to work with her.
  • The professors of the Writing & Rhetoric program especially Vikki Visvis, Sharon English, Becky Vogan, and Daniel Adleman for teaching me how to be a critical thinker and writer and for all their support! Thank you for all the office hours and sessions at the Writing Centre (another GREAT Innis thing).

My theme song:

“Formation” by Beyoncé

A memory I made when I wasn’t studying/working:

  • My first year of women’s water polo with the Varsity Blues was very special. Winning OUAs that year was the cherry on top!

An obstacle I have overcome:

  • I got into a bike accident in my second year that required knee surgery, academic accommodations, taxi rides to campus, and a whole lot of physio at Goldring (in the winter no less) but I got through it!
  • I cannot stress enough that if you are going through something mental, physical, emotional or anything whatsoever to seek out the resources offered by the University that you are entitled to as a student. Nothing is more important than health. PERIOD.

Advice you would give to your undergraduate self:

Everything can go right in your life and you’ll still be anxious worrying about another ever-dangling, never-dropping shoe so you might as well give yourself a break. Be yourself, be curious, do your best, ask for help when you need it. Carry thank you cards and write them often.
